Questo Anonimato E’ Sovversivo (This Anonymity is Subversive) by Italian artist Ruben Montini

24.03.2023. 14.00 - 18.00

The project has been developed by the artist since 2016 and it consists of a vast hand embroidered piece resulting from the cooperation between people living across the EU and has taken place in 28 countries in Europe.

During these years the artist has carried through Europe a 30 meteres long white cotton sheet, asking participants of the events in each country to contribute to the creation of the partecipative embroidery by stitching whatever they wish on the cloth.

In this interactive piece, participants are welcome to join the performance by stitching whatever they feel like.

The final outcome will tell the story of several people that have met in a metaphoric way, while creating something bigger and apparently intangible: the feeling of community and belonging to a wider, borderless union.

The work has been performed in several institutions such as: the Royal School of Needlework in London, Casino Luxembourg, the Museum of European Cultures in Berlin, Rupert - Vilnius, Cruce - Madrid, the House of the Arts - Brno, MAN Museum of Contemporary Art - Nuoro, Designcentrum - Ostersund, Museum Arnhem, Kunsthalle Bratislava, < rotor > Centre for Contemporary Art, Graz and many others.

The final piece will be presented at MACC Foundation in Calasetta, Sardinia, Italy with a solo show by Ruben Montini opening on the 29th April 2023, that aims to trace the evolution of the project. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue with curators’ essays who embraced the project with a photographic documentation by Ela Bialkowska of every “stop” realized in the past years.
