Riga Photography Biennial 2020. ‘Postcards from Suburb’ – workshop with Ingrīda Pičukāne
17.10.2020. 12:00 – 17:00The programme of the 2020 Riga Photography Biennial features a humoristic self-therapeutic photography project by Ingrīda Pičukāne, Postcards from Mooste. The artist plays an equal role by posing for the camera and the location ‒ Mooste, a picturesquely contrasted Estonian town that provides a pastoral backdrop and underscores the ironic message of the postcards.
Location is even more essential in Pičukāne’s Meanwhile in the Suburbs, a thematically different yet equally ironic playful series. The pictures, captured on a smartphone, show interesting spatial situations in the Riga neighbourhood of Vecmīlgrāvis. Created over seven years and originally posted on Facebook, the project was shown last year at the culture palace Ziemeļblāzma. Pičukāne reveals everyday life in her native Vecmīlgrāvis, looking for beauty and surprises in the environment of a ‘sleeping district’, largely considered as degraded and unappealing. Unlike Postcards from Mooste, where a digital camera and tripod were used, here the actual content and ability to capture it quickly matter most, so the ever-available smartphone was Pičukāne’s tool of choice.
Members of the Postcards from the Suburbs workshop will join the artist on a trip to a Riga residential district to capture its distinctive features, eye-catching oddities and scenes with their smartphones and each present a unique visual take on a particular neighbourhood of Riga.
The photographs will be posted as galleries on the social network accounts of Riga Photography Biennial.
