A lecture by art historian Helēna Demakova, Associate Professor at the Art Academy of Latvia
Helēna Demakova will talk about the legendary exhibition “Latvia – XX Century Somersault. 1940–1990”, which took place at the exhibition hall “Latvija” and which she curated.
It was at this exhibition that Sarmīte Māliņa’s object “Watching from the Sidelines”, currently on view at Riga Contemporary Art Space, was shown for the first time.
“Latvia – XX Century Somersault. 1940–1990” ushered in the last decade of the 20th century – a period that saw the rise of the talents who now form the canon of Latvian contemporary art: Sarmīte Māliņa, Aija Zariņa, Andris Breže, Ojārs Pētersons, Kristaps Ģelzis, Oļegs Tillbergs, Juris Boiko and others, whose works are being and will be shown in the exhibition hall as part of the “Giants” series. “Somersault” was the first major manifestation of installation art in Latvia.
